Cremilda Medina will take Cape Verde’s morna to the Unesco Center for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Beja. The show takes place on August 11 at 9:30 pm.
Inaugurated on the 11th of July 2017, the Centro Unesco de Beja has as its space the building of the former Clube Bejense, and is the result of an express will of the Municipality of Beja, of Unesco, and partners such as the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, the Centro Nacional de Cultura, the Aga-Khan Foundation, CENA – Union of Musicians, Show and Audiovisual Professionals, MODA – Associação do Cante Alentejano and Confraria Gastronómica do Alentejo, in safeguarding and promoting the various manifestations of the intangible cultural heritage.
The center also has the task of raising awareness in communities of the importance of safeguarding intangible heritage and increasing their participation in this area, as well as creating and developing partnerships and networks to establish research programs to “bridge knowledge gaps in the management of intangible heritage”. In this sense, the “Noites no Patradouro” appeared, which aims to provide harmonious evenings with various musical styles, which also includes the morna from Cape Verde, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Unesco.
In this year’s edition of “Noites no Logradouro”, it is up to Cremilda Medina, one of the most renowned artists of Cape Verdean music today, to bring the rhythms of Cape Verde to Beja, where Morna stands out.
Cremilda released her second album Nova Aurora at the beginning of May, which has received the best reviews and which has taken her to various stages, the most recent one taking place in Valença on July 22nd together with Katia Guerreiro and with maestro António Victorino d’Almeida, in a show celebrating the maestro’s 70th anniversary.
Nova Aurora brings together an excellent range of Cape Verdean composers. Produced between Portugal and Cape Verde, it has the musical production of the renowned producer and pianist Nando Andrade and has the participation of several renowned musicians.
In this work, Cremilda continues her journey through the rhythms of morna and coladeira, in yet another album thinking about the essence of tradition, continuing her search and preservation of the old days, in sounds that bring to mind other times and people of yesteryear.
Accompanied by Nando Andrade on piano, Dany Fonseca on guitar, Djudjuty Alves on cavaquinho, Nandoca on bass, and Nir Paris on drums, Cremilda Medina performs for the first time in Beja and promises a show with an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, where she will present songs from the new album and songs from the first album Folclore that made Cremilda obtain international recognition.
