Tavira Nights once again liven up the city centre, concerts, dance and theatre are part of the hot August nights, on Friday the population of Tavira and the many tourists were able to hear the wonderful voice of Cremilda Medina, who led the Praça da República, the warmth and joy of Cape Verdean music.
It is always a pleasure to hear the mornas sung by one of the most important singers in Cape Verde today, but in Tavira, her joy and friendliness overflowed from the stage and brought the warmth of the Atlantic islands to all those who filled the centre of Tavira to hear her.
The evening began with the instrumental “Nôte de Mindelo” performed by her talented musicians, followed by Cremilda on stage with “Alô, Alô, São Vicente” and “Surpresa”. The singer took us on a journey through her songs, but also through the islands of Cape Verde, their traditions and memories.
Cremilda Medina was born and raised in the city of Mindelo in São Vicente and began singing at the age of 9. At 14 she joined the youth music group “Rytmos”, livening up parties on the island of Monte Cara. At 19 she joined the music band “Noites de Mindelo”, but her big leap into the limelight came when she was a finalist on the television music program “Talentu Strela”.
In 2011, she won the award for best female performer at the “Mindel Prémio” gala, and in 2013 she was nominated again for best female performer at the “Mindel Awards” gala in São Vicente. In December 2014, she made her debut in Portugal, winning over the press and the public.
Cremilda has won over fans with each concert and has shared the stage with the biggest names in Cape Verdean music, such as Morgadinho, Tito Paris, Maria Alice, Diva Barros, Titina Rodrigues, Boy Gê Mendes, Grace Évora, Mirri Lobo, among many others.
An excellent performer of Coladeira and Morna, both of which are considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, she released her first single in 2016, the morna “Raio de Sol”, a tribute to her maternal grandmother, which earned her her first international nomination in the USA, and also a nomination for “Best Morna” and “Best Video-clip” in Cape Verde, where she won the “Sapo Award”.
In 2017, she released Folclore, her first album, which won her the “World Music” award in the USA, and the “Best Morna” and “Sapo Award” in Cape Verde. She won the “World Music” award in the USA again in 2018 with the song “Nôs Morna”, which she sang in a duet with Tito Paris.
To Tavira, Cremilda took the songs from Nova Aurora, her second album, but also the songs that have enchanted her many fans, on a beautiful and warm summer night that the singer made even more beautiful.
