Children help with the reforestation of Albergaria-a-Velha
Planting trees is a practical way to introduce young people to sustainability and conservation concepts. As children grow, they become aware of the vital role of trees in producing oxygen, regulating the climate and preserving biodiversity.
Aiming to introduce and reinforce these concepts, to young and old, the Municipal Council of Albergaria-a-Velha, together with Floponor and E.Rio, organized a reforestation action of a protection strip of a tributary of the Jardim River that was affected by the fires.
In this activity, students and teachers had the opportunity to work the land with their own hands and plant different forest species, familiarizing themselves with their names, appearance and main functions for the ecosystem in general and for waterways in particular.
The site chosen for planting had been the target of actions to stabilize slopes and regulate the hydrological regime in the previous weeks, using natural engineering techniques, allowing the youngest to travel back in time by seeing how their grandparents and great-grandparents used only natural materials to preserve the forest and take care of the essential resource that is water.
The children were very happy, the more trees there were the more they had planted. This will be an unforgettable day for them.
The Albergaria-a-Velha City Council would like to thank all the entities that supported the rehabilitation of this green corridor, contributing to the success of the activity, and making the Municipality more resilient.
