Cristina Branco releases “Canção da Paciência”

The single “Canção da Paciência”, available from today on digital platforms, will be part of the line-up of the show “Cristina Branco sings José Afonso”, whose national tour has as its main highlight of the concert on December 17th, at Casa da Música in Porto.
… “I am like peace, I know how to wait”.

«That sentence would be enough to sum up everything in this song. There are two possible readings. The first, and most obvious, is the story of the father who waits for years to avenge his daughter’s death; the second, which speaks of the time it takes to mature an objective, a protest, without doubts, without fear. Perhaps that is what power fears most, not the protest that shouts but the one that refuses to kneel without fear, believing in the certainty of the plumb line, of love as a flag. Bringing here, to today, the debate on radical and uncompromising discourse and how it has entered our lexicon, in the everyday discourse of those who seem to have no more time, this violence that is increasingly tolerated against those who only seek peace, love and truth is radical. Let us rise up, because beauty lurks around every corner.»

Three months after the release of “Teresa Torga” — a song in which Cristina Branco deepens the homage to José Afonso that began with the album “Abril” (2007) —, the artist returns to the universe of the iconic singer and composer, this time exploring his work from a unique and illuminating perspective: the feminine gaze.

Cristina Branco revisits the work of José Afonso once again accompanied by her usual musical accomplices: On the piano, Ricardo Dias imprints his lyrical and incisive signature; Bernardo Moreira ensures, on the double bass, a rhythmic and harmonic base of refined consistency; Alexandre Frazão reveals all his versatility and rhythmic sensitivity on the drums; and Mário Delgado, on the electric guitar, adds a unique sound universe that combines tradition and the avant-garde. This collective also includes the promising talent of Tomás Marques, on the saxophone.

ABOUT CRISTINA BRANCO

With a career spanning almost 30 years, 18 albums released and countless concerts around the world, Cristina Branco is a tireless ambassador of Portuguese culture and language. Traditional music is her main aesthetic root, but the influence of jazz, literature and the musicians with whom she shares the stage gives her music a universal character and sublime charm.

She began her artistic career in the Netherlands with “Cristina Branco in Holland” (1997), an album that ended up becoming a real success in that country. In the following years, her name resounded throughout Europe, with sold-out dates in countless cities. “Murmúrios” (1998) and “Post-Scriptum” (2000) reinforced this good moment, and Cristina was awarded two Prix Choc by the magazine Le Monde de La Musique.

This was followed by “Abril” (2007), an album with versions of songs by José Afonso, “Kronos” (2009) and “Fado Tango” (2011), her iconic tenth studio album, which featured collaborations with several renowned Portuguese composers and foreshadowed the artistic renaissance that would come a few years later with “Menina” (2016). Considered the Best Album of the Year by the Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA), this is the first chapter of a trilogy that includes “Branco” (2018) and “Eva” (2020). In these works, Cristina Branco brings together unusual collaborations that cross styles and genres, resulting in unique and innovative interpretations of fado.

In 2022, at 25 years of career, she performed more than 40 shows across Europe and released “Amoras numa Tarde de Outono”, an album in collaboration with pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva. The most recent “Mãe”, released in 2023, is a unique musical creation in which Cristina Branco lends her singular and expressive voice to a variety of composers, as has been her artistic tradition. On record and live, “Mãe” offers the public an original repertoire that transports us on an engaging journey of rediscovery of fado, exploring its emotional depths and nuances. “Senhora do Mar Redondo”, the debut single, is proof of this.

In 2024, “Abril – Cristina Branco canta José Afonso” will return to national stages, in an engaging show with arrangements and musical direction by pianist Ricardo Dias. Póvoa de Varzim, Vila Real, Covilhã, Grândola, Loulé (MED Festival) and Lisbon (São Luiz Teatro Municipal) were some of the stages that, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, had the privilege of hosting this tribute to the repertoire of the singer-songwriter from Liberdade.

In 2025, the show was enriched with new versions and arrangements, maintaining its essence but offering a renewed experience. The new singles “Teresa Torga” and “Canção da Paciência” are the latest and most vibrant expressions of this project.
