Revealing still-underexplored dimensions of José Afonso’s legacy, in Mulheres de Abril, Cristina Branco unveils and gives voice to remarkable female characters, establishing a dialogue across eras on gender issues in Portuguese society.
The album brings together eight emblematic compositions: “Endechas a Bárbara Escrava,” available starting today on digital platforms; the previously revealed singles: “Teresa Torga,” “Canção da Paciência,” and “De Não Saber o Que Me Espera”; as well as the tracks that will only be available digitally on November 28th: “Canção do Desterro,” “Mulher da Erva,” “Verdes São os Campos,” and “Verdade e Mentira.” This selection, the result of meticulous curation, brings together themes where female figures take centre stage in José Afonso’s poetry, exploring multiple facets of the female condition.
Mulheres de Abril is an album that echoes voices of freedom, intimacy, and resistance. The LP edition was carefully pressed on 180-gram colored vinyl at 45 rpm, ensuring a high-fidelity sound experience. The songs that comprise this work will come to life on stage in the show “Mulheres de Abril – Cristina Branco canta José Afonso,” whose national tour will highlight the concerts on November 29th at the Carlos do Carmo Municipal Auditorium (Lagoa) and December 17th at the Casa da Música (Porto).
On record and live, in this contemporary and necessary reinterpretation of the work of one of the greatest figures in Portuguese music, Cristina Branco is accompanied by longtime musical accomplices who solidify her sound: Ricardo Dias (piano), Bernardo Moreira (double bass), Alexandre Frazão (drums), Mário Delgado (guitars), and Tomás Marques (saxophone).
