Cruzeiro Seixas receives Cultural Merit Medal

Artur Cruzeiro Seixas, one of the great names of European surrealism, received this Wednesday, from the hands of the Minister of Culture, the Medal of Cultural Merit.

The ceremony, part of the celebrations of the artist’s centenary, took place this Wednesday morning at the National Library of Portugal, in Lisbon, where an exhibition with drawings that are part of her estate is on display.

Artur do Cruzeiro Seixas, born in Amadora on December 3, 1920. He attended the António Arroio School, where he met Marcelino Vespeira, Júlio Pomar and Mário Cesariny, whom he joined, in the split of the Portuguese Surrealist Movement, to give rise to the Surrealist Group from Lisbon, with artists such as António Maria Lisboa, Carlos Calvet, Mário-Henrique Leiria and Pedro Oom, in the late 1940s.

He is the author of a vast work in the field of plastic arts, but also in poetry and sculpture.

He is represented in the collections of the Museu do Chiado/Contemporary Art, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, National Library of Portugal, Tomar Library, Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, Machado de Castro Museum, in Coimbra, Tavares Proença Júnior Museum, in Castelo Branco, among others.
