The new album by the author of Made In Chyna marks a new chapter in the rapper’s discography — with introspection, here, speaking (much) louder.
It’s not his first album under his name, but it’s unmistakably the first full-length in his discography. After debuting in 2017 with her first studio album (Made In Chyna) alongside Fumaxa, Chyna has been developing her repertoire by piggybacking on impactful singles and bold EPs, until now arriving at Dá-me Vida — a work with a resourcefulness of another magnitude, with an unprecedented depth in the rapper from Linha de Sintra’s discography.
Raised between Queluz, Massamá and Costa da Caparica, Chyna’s rap was also characterized by a notable elasticity, with a common denominator in the boldness of her words. Upfront like few others when it comes to letting off steam on the microphone, it is however on another level that we hear him sing in Dá-me Vida—singing, again, because this album of greater ambitions is not just about rap, which reveals the strength of the fragility of those who allow themselves to give up their hearts.
With an open heart from beginning to end, it is in a recognizably introspective tone that Chyna returns to face her brutally honest writing. This time, much more focused on his less rigid melodic skills, he explores and discovers a side of himself that is even more musical than we already knew — contradicting the most expected perspectives of what would become the successor to Chyna Town (2021).
Powered by a trident of excellent producers — Fumaxa, Gemiiny and Tayob are prominent in the album’s instrumental production — Chyna dives deep into her most soulful version, disregarding strictly outlined metrics in favour of a lightness of spirit throughout two handfuls of new songs. “FMX”, the latest single starring his faithful partner Fumaxa, still led us to believe that the path would be much more predictable. But the A-side of the double single “Nem Metade & Não me Confundam”, the album’s opening track, already pointed in another direction. “Dá-me Vida”, the song that follows this first track — and which gives the entire project its name —, reveals the beginning of the good surprises that await us outside the line-up.
