Danilo Caymmi and Stacey Kent celebrate Tom Jobim at Casa da Música
In the 30 years without the maestro, respected jazz singer and renowned Brazilian singer revisit the great successes of the Bossa Nova genius.
In the year that marks three decades without Tom Jobim, one of his most faithful friends will pay tribute to the Brazilian maestro. Danilo Caymmi, in partnership with the American Stacey Kent, one of the most respected voices in contemporary jazz, presents the concert “A Note on Jobim,” a tribute to the history of the Bossa Nova creator. The duo will perform on October 23rd at Casa da Música in Porto.
“I rarely leave Brazil and, on the few occasions I have, I performed in Lisbon and Porto and was surprised by the Portuguese audience’s receptivity to my music, my voice, my interpretation. That satisfies me a lot,” says Danilo Caymmi about his expectations for performing a concert in Portugal again.
Son of the legendary Dorival Caymmi, Danilo was a member of the band that accompanied Tom Jobim for over 10 years. The artist joined the Banda Nova in 1983, staying with Tom until his death in December 1994. It was through Tom Jobim himself that Danilo finally debuted as a singer.
“I was hired as a flautist, but Tom asked me to sing two songs from his repertoire, ‘A Felicidade’ and ‘Samba do Avião’. That was strange for me. I said ‘The show is yours, Tom.’ Then, he replied with something very funny that I still don’t know the meaning of. Tom said, ‘No, you sing. Your voice sounds like garlic sauce.’ That’s how I started my career as a singer,” recalls Danilo Caymmi, who at the age of 15 had played the flute on his father’s album “Caymmi visita Tom – e leva seus filhos Nana, Dori e Danilo” before.
At the Casa da Música concert, Danilo will recall historical classics such as “Desafinado”, “Garota de Ipanema”, and “Chega de Saudade,” among others. Always in duet with Stacey Kent, one of the great names of contemporary jazz. Nominated for a Grammy with the album “Breakfast on the Morning Tram,” winner of the BBC Jazz Awards, and named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France, the American is a huge bossa nova fan and sings in sweet Portuguese the smooth melodies of the rhythm that started in the late 1950s in Rio de Janeiro.
“Stacey is a great interpreter, with an incredibly precise pitch that you see in very few singers. I have admired her for many years and never imagined that I would work with her. We understand each other very well on stage. It’s a wonderful partnership,” praises Danilo Caymmi.
