Dave Douglas & Joey Baron in concert in April

Salão Brazil, in Coimbra

On the 17th of April, at 9 pm, Salão Brazil, in Coimbra, will host one of the most anticipated meetings of the year. The room will host trumpeter Dave Douglas and drummer Joey Baron, one-half of the historic Masada quartet, led by saxophonist and composer John Zorn.

Not coming from New York, it was this city that brought them together and allowed them, during the last four decades, this crossing with the jazz area and with all the other possibilities around it.

They joined the quartet in 1993 and recorded numerous works throughout the remaining years of the 90s. Before this current reunion on stage, they celebrated the music of Dizzy Gillespie with a sextet led by Dave Douglas.

Dave Douglas (59 years old) has more than 60 albums of edited originals and was twice nominated for the Grammys. His encounter with New York took place when, in 1985, he went to study, becoming one of the most important and respected figures in jazz. He has received a Doris Duke Award and a fellowship from the respected Guggenheim Foundation. He played in the sextet, quintet, quartet, trio or duo, electric or acoustic.

Joey Baron was in Bill Frisell’s band for a decade and was a member of Naked City. He played alongside names like Dizzy Gillespie, Carmen Mcrae, Tony Bennett, Chet Baker, Laurie Anderson, Stan Getz, David Bowie, Philip Glass and Al Jarreau.

Thus, in the eyes of those who witness this concert, Salão Brazil will be and stage another piece of history.
