“Regarding the theme of “Family”, specifically in post-pandemic times, I needed to write something that had to do with the connection between People. I think the pandemic was a test of all kinds of connections. The vision and the feeling “Família” took on another dimension, even because of the nostalgia of giving a hug to someone who could be next door. This theme is, in that sense, almost a cry for freedom”, says David Cruz.
Born in Lisbon, son of Cape Verdean parents, David Cruz grew up surrounded by music, from the sounds of Cape Verde brought by his parents to the Michael Jackson hits brought by MTV in the early 90s. He debuted in 2003 on Ídolos. He went through renowned musical projects such as TLDreamz, presenting themes of his own. Zouk and R&B rhythms captivated many people and, shortly afterward, David was invited by Hip Hop artist Sam the Kid to join his tour, as one of the vocalists on stage.
With Sam, David toured some of the most important stages and festivals in the country, having also performed in the United States, Germany, and Austria, among other countries. In 2008, he was invited to participate in the theme Dopping, inserted in the reissue of the album Pratica (Mente) by Sam the Kid. He also participated in themes by Nigga Poison, and in themes by Dj CruzFader. David participated in the compilation Longplay by Dj Link, which brings together the greatest Soul artists in the country, Dino D ́Santiago, NBC, NewMax.
He teamed up with DJ and Dance Music Producer Diego Miranda e Villanova, to make some songs of his own: “Only with Sunshine”, is one of them, which was nominated at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards in the category of Best Portuguese Act.
Even with all the participants and projects, David still finds time to write for other artists, in the discovery of new talents, he composed the theme “The gift of life” interpreted by Daniela Pimenta, and produced by Jay A, a theme that surpassed 1 million internet visits in just 2 months. In 2020, he was invited by the well-known Rapper NGA for the theme “If you had told me”, winner of best Rap / Hip Hop video ANGOLA VMAS.
David has always worked in parallel with great national artists such as Sam the Kid, Coolhipnoise, Orelha Negra, Expensive Soul, Jorge Fernando, Xeg, and still works today with Richie Campbell & 911. He was and is very present in Hip Hop Culture.
