DECO PROteste launches bio-waste collection monitoring platform and PAYT system
- The platform allows monitoring the implementation of bio-waste collection and the PAYT system, in which families pay for the waste management service depending on the garbage they produce, in the various municipalities of the country
- A new interactive map favours the provision of information on this matter aggregated by the municipality for consumers
- By July 2026, all municipalities will have to have implemented waste tariff calculation de-indexed from water consumption
DECO PROteste has just launched a new platform that allows monitoring the implementation of selective collection of bio-waste and the PAYT system (in English “Pay-As-You-Throw”) in 308 Portuguese municipalities.
The objective of this platform, which currently includes information on 118 municipalities, is to inform consumers, in a simple and accessible way, about the status of domestic bio-waste collection and the PAYT system in their municipality, as well as, in a second phase, savings estimated with this system, since the waste tariff will have to be de-indexed from water consumption by July 2026.
This is also a response from DECO PROteste to a demonstrated need to monitor the implementation of this new system in Portugal. As for the recovery and selective collection of bio-waste in homes, this was expected to be implemented in all municipalities by the end of 2023.
Of the 118 municipalities that provided information to DECO PROteste about the collection of bio-waste and the PAYT system, seven municipalities have already implemented the PAYT system, with Maia and Guimarães being the most advanced. As for the remainder, 35 have selective collection of bio-waste in different phases of implementation, 42 are currently investing in community and/or domestic composting and 34 have not yet implemented the recovery of bio-waste, but some are in the process of doing so.
In the second phase, the new platform will estimate the costs of the PAYT system tariff, taking into account the production levels of the family’s unsorted waste in each municipality.
All information collected is integrated into the DECO PROteste Sustainability page.
