International Youth Day: Celebrate by Sponsoring an Olive Tree That Grows with Each Young Person

Today is International Youth Day. This day, which reinforces the importance of young people in the development of civil society, is an excellent opportunity to explain to them the need for their involvement in the most divisive issues in our society, such as the environment and nature.

Therefore, the organisation Apadrinha uma Oliveira (Sponsor an Olive Tree) launches a challenge to young Portuguese people: why not sponsor an olive tree, care for it, and watch it grow while the young sponsor becomes an active adult in society? These centuries-old olive trees will accompany the development of these young people and will certainly help create unforgettable memories.

How can young people sponsor an olive tree?

Sponsoring an olive tree can be done in several ways, but the simplest format is online, through the website apadrinhaumaoliveira.org. On this website, young people simply select the olive tree they want to sponsor, and then they can challenge their family to visit the olive tree in Abrantes and baptise it together. The following year, sponsors receive, as a thank you, up to two litres of extra virgin olive oil. This sponsorship is guaranteed after an annual donation of €35 or €60—and we’re sure parents will love contributing to this initiative for their young children.

At Apadrinha Uma Oliveira, abandoned olive groves are restored to ensure the continuity of the biodiversity that has always been part of our landscape and natural heritage. By restoring these groves, we are not only preserving the natural heritage but also creating new job opportunities for people at risk of social exclusion. Sponsoring an olive tree is, therefore, a sustainable and conscious gesture for the good of society and the environment. To date, four thousand olive trees have been restored with the support of more than 160 sponsors.

On this International Youth Day, there’s nothing better than contributing to the preservation of natural heritage.
