Dino Parque da Lourinhã exhibits for the first time new fossils discovered in Portugal

Dino Parque da Lourinhã will have a new temporary exhibition. From the 13th of August, until the end of summer, fossils of Plesiopharos moelensis discovered in Portugal will be on display for the first time.

Plesiopharos moelensis, a new species of marine reptile from the dinosaur era, inhabited our planet about 195 million years ago and is the oldest and most complete specimen in the Iberian Peninsula. But the fascination for this reptile does not stop with its antiquity: the Plesiopharos has a shape that easily associates it with the silhouette of the famous Loch Ness monster.

Not near a lake, but near the ocean, the fossils were discovered by two collectors, Victor Teixeira and António Domingos, in São Pedro de Moel, in the municipality of Marinha Grande. Donated to the Lourinhã Museum, the fossils were prepared in the Dino Parque laboratory by an international team of paleontologists and geologists linked to various institutions.

The temporary exhibition will show not only the fossils of Plesiopharos moelensis, but also the evolution of plesiosaurs and other marine reptiles from the dinosaur era, the first discoveries and the geological importance of the São Pedro de Moel area.

A fascinating find to be visited until the end of the summer at Dino Parque da Lourinhã, among the company of other equally fascinating historical creatures.
