ABOUT SOALHEIRO:
In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his family decided to innovate and planted the first plot of continuous vines of the Alvarinho variety in Melgaço. A few years later, in 1982, João António transformed his passion for vineyards and wine into a small independent family production, he took the car out of the family garage and it was transformed and became the Soalheiro wine cellar, Alvarinho’s first brand. in Melgaço. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been linked to the production of Alvarinho in the territory.
Today, brothers Maria João and António Luís, together with their mother, Maria Palmira Cerdeira, continue the family project. António Luís, who graduated in Enology, built a deep knowledge of the Alvarinho grape variety throughout his life. Maria João, a veterinarian by profession, takes responsibility for viticulture and has successfully introduced organic production into agricultural practices on her property. Soalheiro is now expanding to wine tourism and the production of organic infusions. The project has grown and is now the result of the work and passion of a team that embraces the usual attitude, of a Winegrowers Club with more than 150 families and a clear vision: to continue without leaving the place, guaranteeing the sustainable development of the territory of origin, Monção and Melgaço.
The name Soalheiro comes from the characteristics of the first plot of vineyard that gave rise to the project – a plot that, due to its location, receives sunlight throughout the day.
