Professor at the Polytechnic of Setúbal distinguished for research in the area of Biomechanics

Young Researcher Award Prof. João Martins, attributed by APMTAC to André Castro

André Castro, a professor at the Polytechnic of Setúbal (IPS), has just been distinguished with the Prof. Young Researcher Award. João Martins, awarded by APMTAC – Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics.

The award distinguishes a research path dedicated to the broad field of Mechanics and very particularly to the area of Computational Biomechanics, “a topic on which I have concentrated my work in these years”, says the researcher, recognizing that the impact of this award “will essentially be at the level of motivation to continue.”

“My work over the last few years, which is the origin of this award, focuses on the characterization of biological tissues, such as bone or cartilage, and the development of medical devices, such as prostheses or other implants”, he explains, highlighting the contribution of computational methods “to reach optimized solutions faster and more efficiently, according to the mechanical properties of the affected tissues and the characteristics of each patient”.

A biomedical engineer graduated from the University of Minho, where he also completed his doctorate, with collaborations with the universities of Aveiro and Eindhoven Technological University, in the Netherlands, André Castro then headed to the United Kingdom, as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Sheffield.

He is currently an assistant professor at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal (ESTSetúbal / IPS), integrating the Department of Mechanical Engineering and also serving as coordinator of the degree in Mechanical Engineering. At the same time, he is an integrated researcher at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC), at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST-UL), a member of the Associated Laboratory of Energy, Transport and Aeronautics (LAETA) and a vice-president of the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics.

The award, which distinguishes researchers in the area of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics aged up to 40 years, will be awarded during the next Congress of Numerical Methods in Engineering, which takes place in Aveiro, from the 4th to the 6th of September, organized by APMTAC.
