Two films by João Viana are reborn internationally in April
Colonial-themed cinematographic works
“The Battle of Tabatô” (2013) is shown at the Berlin Cinematheque (Arsenal) and “Our Madness” (2018) at the 60th Venice Biennale, representing Qatar.
Portuguese director João Viana will have two of his colonial-themed films shown internationally in April. “The Battle of Tabatô”, a 2013 film, will be shown on April 20th at the Berlin Cinematheque (Arsenal). “Our Madness”, a 2018 film, will be shown throughout the 60th Venice Biennale, in Italy, representing Qatar.
“Our Madness” will be shown in two ways: with projections of the work, not yet scheduled, and in looped excerpts, as part of the exhibition called “Your Ghost is Mine: Expanded Cinema, Amplified Voices”, curated by Mattieu Orlean and produced by Qatar Museums, co-organized by the Doha Film Institute and the Mathaf Museum and the future Arte Mill. The exhibition that includes the film will be open to the public for six months, between April 18th and November 19th this year.
According to the organization, “this original exhibition, produced by Qatar Museums, presents moving images that focus on contemporary experiences of community life, retreat, transnational crossings and exile”. “It will offer a comprehensive and immersive experience, through a selection of films produced, co-produced or initiated by the Doha Film Institute, as well as video installations from Mathaf’s collections: Arab Museum of Modern Art and the upcoming Art Mill Museum.”
“The Battle of Tabatô”, filmed in Guinea-Bissau, was awarded an honourable mention at the Berlin International Film Festival. It also won, among other distinctions, the award for Best African Film at the Milan Festival. “Our Madness”, shot in Mozambique, was presented at the “Atelier de la Cinéfondation”, at the Cannes Film Festival, an initiative that allows access to international co-productions. It won the Best Portuguese Feature Film Award at the IndieLisboa festival.
