Two hotels in the Douro belonging to the Pacheca Group have been included in the Michelin Guide’s list of choices
The Wine House Hotel at Quinta da Pacheca and Quinta do Barrilário Douro Wine Hotel and SPA, five-star establishments, have been distinguished by the Michelin Keys programme
The Wine House Hotel at Quinta da Pacheca and the Douro Wine Hotel and SPA at Quinta de São José do Barrilário have just been included in the short list of 55 Portuguese hotels chosen by the renowned Michelin Guide, which selects the best tourist complexes in the world through the Michelin Keys programme.
After “countless hours of evaluation by the inspectors” of what is considered the encyclopedia of destinations that best represent the art of fine cooking and hospitality, the two five-star establishments have been included in the very first “One Key” selection for our country. Which, the Michelin Guide emphasises, “reflects the great diversity of landscapes” in Portugal.
Just like Michelin Stars for restaurants, the Michelin Keys represent “our most notable hotels”, says the announcement.
The Wine House Hotel at Quinta da Pacheca, in Lamego, says the Michelin Guide, “leaves little to the imagination, but that’s a good thing around here.” Why? “It’s an 18th-century manor house in a Douro Valley winery that combines classic charm with contemporary interior design and modern comforts from the boutique era,” the Guide points out, not only impressed by the “traditional hotel rooms” but also by “two rows of wine barrels large enough for a cozy bedroom and bathroom, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyards.”
In its descriptive note, the Michelin Guide emphasises that “there are plenty of opportunities for excursions and tastings, and the hotel restaurant offers cooking classes and picnics in addition to regular meal service – all accompanied by a variety of local wines.”
There’s also no shortage of praise for the Douro Wine Hotel and SPA at Quinta de São José do Barrilário, in Armamar. “To truly appreciate the spectacular location of Quinta São José do Barrilário, perched high in the lush green hills of the Douro Valley, framed by terraced vineyards that slope down to the Douro River, you’d have to see it from the air. Luckily, you can get up close and personal from the rooftop infinity pool of this luxury hotel. The building has a gently curved shape, following the lines of the landscape, and its rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the natural surroundings,” notes the Michelin Guide, describing the exteriors. Then, on to the rooms and restaurant, which are said to be “modern and wood-paneled, and inspired by the region’s winemaking traditions – the custom-made beds look as if they were created from giant wine barrels. The restaurant serves wines produced in the adjacent vineyard, and locally grown grapes are incorporated into the hotel’s spa treatments.”
