With Rita Brütt, Mariana Rebelo and live music with Vasco Pimentel, Miguel Sobral Curado and Francisco Nogueira, based on an original text by Eduardo Brito and Joana Bértholo.
LISBOA
June 28 and 29 – BOTA
July 4, 5 and 6 – Teatro do Bairro
A couple going through a breakup sits at a restaurant table and discusses their life together. Despite happy memories, layers of resentment overlap, while a jazz band accompanies the intensity of the live dialogue.
“Dueto Duelo” is an invitation to reflect on the profound transformations of modern relationships and the new marital dynamics, with directness and some humour.

After its world premiere in Coimbra at the end of last year, and performances in Ovar, Santarém, Porto and Benedita, “Dueto Duelo” finally arrives in Lisbon, in two venues: on 28 and 29 June, at BOTA, and from 4 to 6 July, at Teatro do Bairro.
Directed by Ricardo Vaz Trindade, this show, which is somewhere between theatre and musical, presents Tiago and Teresa, a couple whose relationship is hanging by a thread. Immersed in the elegant atmosphere of a restaurant and in the company of a jazz trio, the duo starring Ricardo Vaz Trindade and Rita Brütt unveil a life together made up of good times, but also of routines, children, jealousy, betrayals, misunderstandings and loss of intimacy and autonomy. Singing sometimes becomes the best solution when words fail, lightening the mood.
Through a moving contemporary tale, created from an original text by Eduardo Brito and Joana Bértholo, the narrative declares the end of the maxim “happily ever after”, in a world where distance has become more pronounced and the ideal of romantic love has given way to hyper-individualism, stimuli and possibilities of global society.
Moderating and reporting this seemingly hopeless communication struggle between an actress trying to build a career in film and a teacher who left behind his life as a musician to pay the bills, is actress Mariana Rebelo, the hostess of the restaurant – once the “lobby of love” or the “foyer of romance”, as she calls it. She also lends her voice to some of the scores performed by Vasco Pimentel (piano and musical direction), Miguel Sobral Curado (drums) and Francisco Nogueira (double bass), the jazz combo that responds live to the tension created in real time by Tiago and Teresa.
“Dueto Duelo” was advised by a team of psychologists who conducted the themes of conjugality through territories of scientific verisimilitude, based on fictitious couples therapy sessions. It is in this context that each presentation of the show also suggests a series of round tables, with the participation of experts in relationships, conjugality and family Henda Vieira Lopes, Luana Cunha Ferreira and Edite Queiroz (here as moderator), the trio responsible for the scientific consultancy of this theatrical creation. The mourning of affections, the reorganisation of routine, children amid the turmoil and identity, after a relationship ends, are some of the issues discussed.
Not to be missed, in Lisbon, “Dueto Duelo” invites reflection on romantic bonds in a time of constant metamorphosis, their dynamics and the fight for a flame that tends to go out.
On display at BOTA (Organised Base of Toca das Artes), on June 28 and 29, at 9 pm; and Teatro do Bairro, from July 4 to 6 – Friday, at 9:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, at 6 pm.
Tickets for both theatres cost €15 and are on sale at the venues. Tickets for Teatro do Bairro are also available at BOL.
