A heritage of millennia and testament to one of the richest musical traditions in the world, Indian classical music is the fruit of an uninterrupted lineage of masters and disciples, where improvisation coexists with the most rigorous formal discipline.
The Auditorium of the Museu do Oriente hosts, on September 13, at 7 pm, the concert “Hindustani Classical Music | Sitar, Violin, and Tabla, the tradition of northern India,” featuring four international artists: Srinivas Reddy (sitar), Stephen Bull (violin), Rajiv Bhatt (tabla), and Ajit Acharya (tabla).
With roots dating back to the Mughal Empire and even further back to musical treatises in Sanskrit, Hindustani music is presented in this concert in a lively dialogue, through traditional ragas designed for the show. The selection of compositions will be interspersed with moments of improvisation, in a program that reflects the spiritual and contemplative nature of this musical practice.

The quartet of performers combines academic experience with internationally recognized careers. Srinivas Reddy, a sitarist, translator, and scholar, is a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar at IIT Gandhinagar and the author of leading translations of classical Indian literature. Stephen Bull, a violinist living in Portugal since 1995, has developed a unique trajectory between European baroque music and Indian music, which resulted in the founding of the Luso Sangeet Group, which specializes in using texts by Camões, Pessoa, and others to bring Indian music to Portuguese-speaking audiences. Ajit Acharya, a tabla player, combines a scientific career with in-depth study of this instrument, highlighting its versatility and research into intercultural musical convergences. Rajiv Bhatt, also a tabla player, combines his professional teaching and consulting with a long-standing performance practice, which has resulted in invitations to perform on stages and in institutions around the world.
Part of the parallel program of the exhibition “Photo Art Ganesh, Hindustani Classical Music | Sitar, Violin, and Tabla” is a rare opportunity to hear, in Lisbon, performers who represent the vitality and sophistication of Indian classical music, in a show that celebrates the art of listening, improvisation, and the encounter between cultures.
