Eliades Ochoa, star of the Buena Vista Social Club
Lisbon on March 24th
After sold-out shows on his last trips to Portugal, the guitarist performs with a full band at the Tivoli Theater.
Eliades Ochoa, one of the most iconic artists in Cuban music and star of Buena Vista Social Club, returns to Portugal. After sold-out concerts in Lisbon in 2020 and at the Festival Músicas do Mundo in Sines in 2024, Mr. Chan Chan, 78, returns to the country with a full band. On March 24th, the artist will take to the stage at the Tivoli Theater in Lisbon in an unmissable night for Latin music lovers.
World renowned for his work as one of the original members of Buena Vista Social Club, the guitarist and composer lends his voice to the iconic “Chan Chan”, the opening theme of the album that became the group’s symbol and the artist’s nickname. Known for his signature image – the hat, the cowboy boots and the rustic style – Eliades Ochoa is also often called the Johnny Cash of Cuba, thanks to his unmistakable look and the depth of his interpretation.
With his latest album, 2023’s Guajiro (“Peasant”), Ochoa reaffirms his place as one of the most authentic representatives of Cuban music. The album celebrates its roots, mixing the traditional with the contemporary, in a sound that crosses generations and borders. Throughout his career, Eliades Ochoa has released nine solo albums, received four Latin Grammys and was nominated for a Grammy for his project Afrocubism in 2010. His music, deeply rooted in the Guajiro sound, continues to captivate audiences around the world.
Eliades Ochoa’s show at Teatro Tivoli is promoted by Cloud Man Tree in partnership with Toca-M.
ABOUT BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB
The trajectory of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club project, which brought together some of Cuba’s greatest artists – including the late Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo – took a turn in the 1990s, with the recording of the album of the same name produced by the American Ry Cooder. The album, which included classic Cuban songs such as “Chan Chan,” “El cuarto de Tula”, and “El carretero,” became a hit and was performed in Amsterdam. German director Wim Wenders transformed the recordings of the shows in the Dutch capital and New York into the documentary that made the group a worldwide phenomenon.
