In 2024 in the Municipal Galleries
A critical analysis of the use of technology and its impact on human life, photography as a testimony of time and reflections on the recent history of Portugal and issues such as identity, sexuality or gender equality, mark the 2024 season at the Municipal Galleries from Lisbon.
To start the year, a program was designed for the five exhibition spaces that make up the Municipal Galleries, focusing on the development and production of new contemporary art projects. But also seeking to serve the artistic fabric in its various aspects and expressions, age groups, genders and geographies, through the development and holding of individual and collective exhibitions, seeking to raise awareness, disseminate and contribute to critical thinking about contemporary artistic production.
Two new exhibitions, Contemporânea Film(e) – 1st Part with artistic direction by Celina Brás and works by Alice dos Reis, Andreia Santana, Diogo Evangelista (at Galeria da Avenida da India) and the solo show by Daniela Ângelo, Babuíno Talismã, curated by Bernardo José de Souza, which runs until March at Galeria da Boavista, opened this month and others will open soon.
Also in January, at Pavilhão Branco, Albano da Silva Pereira’s solo exhibition, Netsuke, curated by Sara Antónia Matos, director of Galerias Municipais, from the 23rd, which combines and crosses his work in photographic and cinematographic support with its collection of objects and talismans from Japanese culture.
At the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional, celebrating 50 years of the 25th of April, the exhibition Factum, by Eduardo Gageiro, opens on the 26th, opening to the public on the 27th. In addition to iconic photographs from the 25th of April 1974, works illustrating the country in its various political, social and cultural vicissitudes are shown, from the 1950s to 2023, some of them never seen before, in an exhibition that brings together around 170 photographs.
On February, 17th, at Galeria Avenida da India, the second part of the Contemporânea Film(e) project opens more-than-human — perspectives on technology and futurity, with artistic direction by Celina Brás and films by AnaMary Bilbao, Igor Jesus and Pedro Barateiro. A work that seeks to offer some reflections on current affairs and possible futures.
Also in February, Galeria Quadrum begins its 2024 exhibition cycle, with a solo exhibition by Alice Geirinhas, There are Stones in the Eyes, curated by Ana Anacleto.
Soon, we will share more information about the series of exhibitions and events that will take place during the second quarter of the year: Luisa Cunha, Andreia Santana, Délio Jasse, João Motta Guedes, among others, which are already in preparation. A notable highlight of this program focuses on a new project developed by this direction, which involves annually inviting an artist of recognizable merit to intervene simultaneously in the five Municipal Galleries and the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, creating for the six spaces “A Work in Six Parts.” For this year 2024, the Municipal Galleries commissioned a sound work from the artist Luisa Cunha that will be shown/listened to in the various galleries during the last fortnight of April.
The Municipal Galleries, under the management of EGEAC, are made up of five spaces with different physical characteristics and locations in the city: the Pavilhão Branco (Campo Grande), the Galeria da Boavista (Santos), the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional (Belém), the Galeria Quadrum (Alvalade) and Galeria Avenida da India (Belém).
