Meeting of French Classics gathered 70 time machines in Lisbon

The National Carriages Museum in Lisbon hosted the Meeting of French Classics, an organization of the ACP Classics. Seven dozen treasures on wheels revived different eras of the automobile in Portugal.

Brands such as Alpine, Citroën, Peugeot, Renault, Simca and Talbot have become part of the lives of millions of drivers in Portugal over decades. Many became fans of models that were also instrumental in the democratization of the automobile. This culture, around French cars, was the motto of the Meeting of French Classics.

An organization of the ACP Classics that, this year, took seven dozen copies to the National Carriages Museum. A number higher than the 2023 and that confirms the popularity of the concept, where owners and aficionados meet and exchange experiences about their ‘treasures’ on wheels.

And there was no lack of interest in the car park parked in front of the National Carriages Museum. Several 1940s Citroën 11BL took a prominent role, alongside two rare DS convertibles.

A beautiful Alpine Renault A110 focused attention on kids and adults, referring to the famous victories of the French brand in rallies. Due to its rarity, a Simca Aronde convertible also won a special place in the meeting.

The popular ‘Ladybugs‘, as the Renault 4CV in Portugal were known, made us go back to the 1950s and 1960s, establishing a curious contrast with an exuberant Citroën SM, a model from the collaboration between Citroën and Maserati.

But the present (and the future) of the French automotive industry were also on display, with some recent models of Citroën, DS, Peugeot and Renault, impossible to glimpse for pioneers like Count D’Avillez who in 1895, imported the first car to circulate in Portugal: a Panhard & Levassor built in France, which now shines the booty of the National Carriages Museum.

From century-old machines to the most contemporary and sophisticated creations, the charm of French cars has left its mark on the hundreds of enthusiasts who passed through the Meeting of French Classics.
New time travel is scheduled for 2025.
