A festival organized by the City Council of Coimbra and produced by Luís de Matos Produções Lda., which brings 15 international artists to the city in this 25th edition.

The message I want to convey to you is this: welcome to Coimbra!”, began by saying the mayor, Manuel Machado, welcoming the magicians who were present at the Salão Nobre of the Paços do Concelho. “I would like to welcome the arrival of all the magicians who come from Argentina, Brazil, Spain, the United States of America, England, Israel, Peru and, of course, Portugal”, he reinforced. “This journey began 29 years ago and was driven by them, including Luís de Matos, to whom I am especially grateful for the organization, work, dedication, which has allowed us to keep the Magic Gatherings even in extraordinary times like these. to live”, stressed Manuel Machado, concluding: “It is thanks to your work that the city becomes richer, more welcoming, more attractive”.

The Magic Encounters take place at a time when, worldwide, all similar festivals have been canceled. We have a temptation, a tendency, and an addiction to look at those who are bigger than us. This year’s edition features 16 artists from eight countries and four continents. This speaks well of the dimension of Encontros Mágicos as an international festival of magic, in this case taking place in Coimbra”, said the producer of the event, Luís de Matos. “The Magic Meetings are a clear and unequivocal example of the European dimension of a part of the city’s regular programming, which has it and which is, in fact, extraordinary, unique”, added the magician.

The biggest and oldest magic festival held in Portugal is back in the city for its 25th edition, this year featuring 15 artists from eight countries on four continents. There are 80 representations that will take place on the street over five days, in spaces such as the Old Church of the Convent São Francisco, the Old College of Arts, the Cloisters of the Machado Castro Museum, the Colégio da Graça, the Jardim da Casa da Escrita, the Convento São Francisco Restaurant Garden, the Santa Clara Monastery Gardens, the Green Park, the Praça 8 de Maio and the Bandeiras Square of the São Francisco Convent.

An edition that takes place in a pandemic context and, as such, like last year’s edition, has a specific format, adapted to the guidelines of the health authorities, in compliance with all the safety standards of the participants. In this way, and despite the performances taking place in the public space, they will be delimited in order to have control over the capacity and to guarantee the foreseen and necessary distance. The shows will be, as always, free of charge, but prior reservations are also mandatory.
