Environment Agency gives ‘green light’ to Lisbon Metro expansion
The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) has issued a favourable Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) conditional on the project that creates a circular line in the Metropolitano de Lisboa and connects the Rat to Cais do Sodré, the carrier announced today.
In a statement, the company said it had received from APA a statement “conditioned on compliance with the terms and conditions imposed in the document“, which are not specified.
At stake is the project ‘Extension between the Rato station and the Cais do Sodré station, including the new connections in the Campo Grande viaducts’.
With these works, a circular line is obtained from the Campo Grande with the Verde and Amarela lines, with the remaining lines running as radial lines – Yellow line (Odivelas to Telheiras), Blue line (Reboleira – Santa Apolónia) and Red line (S. Sebastião – Airport).
The expansion represents an “investment of 210.2 million euros, and the works must be started by the end of the first half of 2019“, with a projected execution period of 68 months (up to 2023), according to the State Budget proposal for 2019.
“The Metropolitano de Lisboa reaffirms its commitment to continue to promote sustainable mobility, as a structural solution for mobility in Lisbon, following the best standards of quality, safety and economic, social and environmental effectiveness, through the bet in new forms of loyalty and attracting new customers, “the carrier said in the statement released today.
In addition to this expansion project, the Government will continue to acquire rolling stock for the Lisbon Metro, namely 14 new triple units, and a new signalling system, totalling 136.5 million euros, according to the State Budget.
