“Porto Sculptor” Honored with a commemorative exhibition of his life and work
Henrique Moreira received a gold medal from the city of Porto 55 years ago
The exhibition “Conserving culture: The sculptor Henrique Moreira” will honor, as of March 10th, the life and work of the “Sculptor of Porto”, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the attribution of the Gold Medal of the city of Porto to the author.
Through photographic records, the projection of an interview, illustrations, and other written and audiovisual records, the Portucalense University (UPT) will celebrate the life and cultural and social impact of the work of Henrique Moreira, nicknamed the “Sculptor of Porto” because of the most of his vast work was produced for the city of Porto.
The inauguration of the exhibition promoted by Portucalense University (UPT) will also feature an academic, cultural, and social debate around the life and artistic work of Henrique Moreira.
The round table, scheduled to start at 10:00 am on March 10, will be attended by Laura Castro, director of the Northern Regional Directorate for Culture, Cipriano Castro, President of the Parish Council of Avintes, Gonçalves Guimarães, director of “Solar Condes de Resende”, Joaquim Pinto da Silva, founder and director of “Progresso da Foz” in Porto and of the Belgian cultural center, publisher and bookstore “Orfeu”, and also Luis Moreira, great-grandson of sculptor Henrique Moreira.
Throughout this session celebrating the author born in Vila Nova de Gaia, in 1890, his impact on the urban landscape of the city of Porto will be discussed, highlighting the works that he has on Avenida dos Aliados, Praça da República, Rotunda da Boavista, in Jardim, do Passeio Alegre, as well as in many other spots in the undefeated city.
In addition to the mark he left in the city of Porto, Henrique Moreira has worked in the historic centers of many other cities in the country, beautifying the facades of renowned buildings and gardens in Gaia, Oliveira de Azeméis, S. João da Madeira, Funchal, Tomar, Barcelos or Caldas da Rainha.
The exhibition “Conserving culture: The sculptor Henrique Moreira” will be on display at the UPT General Library until March 24, as part of the activities plan of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, also in partnership with the Cultura@Portuguese project.
