“Embrujo Flamenco” show at Casino Estoril
The Black and Silver Room at Casino Estoril will host the show “Embrujo Flamenco” on March 17th at 9 pm.
Directed by Antonio Ariza Momblant, seasoned dancers and musicians from the Hesperiana Symphony Orchestra will showcase the vibrancy and passion of the centuries-old Spanish art form.
In “Embrujo Flamenco” the poetry and strength we immediately associate with flamenco prevail. It was originally a ballet with music by Manuel de Falla that premiered at the Teatro Lara in 1915, in Malasaña, today one of the most historic and “alternative” areas of Madrid.
It was Pastora Imperio, one of the most emblematic flamenco dancers of the last century, who challenged Falla to compose the music for a ballet for which she proposed to sing and dance, in the role of Candelas.
The plot was based on a popular gypsy legend that librettist Martinez Sierra heard from the artist’s mother. It tells the story of a spirit’s return to the world of the living to prevent any other man from taking his place alongside the beautiful Candelas, his wife. The suitor, Carmelo, was terrified by the appearances of the spirit of that gypsy, who in life had behaved in a less than virtuous manner. Carmelo comes up with a plan. He convinces a friend of Candelas, the young Lucia, to pretend to be in love to seduce the sinister figure, to gain time that would allow him to declare his feelings and obtain from Candelas the “kiss of perfect love”. The spirit is thus deceived and exorcised; overcome through Love.
The original score was composed for a small chamber ensemble, with only ten instruments: flute, oboe, horn, trumpet, piano and string quintet. Later, it would be adapted by the composer himself for orchestra, a format that is now presented in the main concert halls worldwide.
