Primus Inter Pares is a joint initiative between Santander and Expresso that began in 2004 to recognise academic excellence among Portuguese students. The 21st edition will recognise five students who wish to begin a master’s degree in 2026, regardless of academic field, with merit scholarships worth €10,000.
These awards are intended for those completing an undergraduate degree, or who have already graduated but have not yet begun their master’s degree. The initiative aims to recognise, in addition to merit and excellence, human qualities and ethical values.
The history of these awards reinforces their relevance and impact, with 100 students already recognised, 60 of whom have earned MBAs from international and national universities over the course of 20 editions.
Open to all academic fields, the award features a jury of diverse and complementary profiles, reflecting its mission to recognise diverse talents and perspectives.
The prominence of this mission is based on the introduction of socioeconomic criteria to strengthen the awards’ contribution to social mobility. Given that Portugal is one of the OECD countries where socioeconomic factors weigh most heavily in the decision to pursue further studies after graduation, these awards will now be granted to students wishing to enrol in Master’s programs at national universities, thus contributing to
national talent and academic diversity.
