This is the most important European architecture award, launched in 1987 by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, an entity based in Barcelona, Spain, and attributed in the first edition, the following year, to the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, for the Borges & building Brother, in Vila do Conde.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he prize, organized in partnership with the European Commission since 2001 to distinguish architectural projects of excellence built in Europe, was due in 2021, but the organization decided to postpone it until 2022, due to the context of the global pandemic.
In this sense, the process calendar was revised “to include and include all works, and ensure the rigor and excellence of the evaluation of all projects”, indicates the Foundation in the statement.
The main prize amounts to 60 thousand euros and a prize is also given to a young emerging value in architecture, in the amount of 20 thousand euros.
According to the new calendar released by the organization, throughout 2021, the process will have two phases: the first in January, with the announcement of the nominees with work completed between October 2018 and October 2020, and a second phase in September, with the announcement of nominees with work completed between October 2020 and April 2021, as well as the announcement of the composition of the jury.
In December next year, the first jury meeting will take place, and in January 2022 the ´shortlist´ of the 40 projects selected from the candidates will be announced, followed by the disclosure of the five finalists in February, and the visit to these projects by the members of the jury, scheduled for March.
The announcement of the winners is scheduled for April 2022, and in May there will be conferences, debates, an exhibition and the award ceremony in Barcelona.
The Mies van der Rohe Foundation was created in 1983 by the city council of Barcelona with the aim of recovering the German pavilion designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 — 1969) for the international exhibition of 1929.
