I am my own woman

Show of Honor on stage until the 12th

On Tuesday the 11th, at 3 pm, at Casa da Cerca – Centro de Arte Contemporânea, the second session of the training course O Sentido dos Mestres will take place, with Franco Laera, which this year is dedicated to theatrical production. At 6 pm, there will be a Colloquium on the Esplanade of the D. António da Costa School with the Lebanese Hanane Hajj Ali, author of the show Jogging. Later, at 8 pm, there is music on the Esplanade with the band Carapaça Livre. Then, at 9.30 pm, Forum Municipal Romeu Correia, the Show of Honor (chosen by the public to return to the Festival this year) I am my own woman, with a text by Doug Wright, staged by Carlos Avilez and interpreted by Marco D’ Almeida. At the same time, Calvário, the new show by Companhia de Teatro de Almada, with a text by Rodrigo Francisco, takes the stage in the Experimental Room of the Municipal Theater Joaquim Benite.

“Who is she?” seems to be the question the author asks throughout this play. Charlotte von Mahlsdorf is talked about and her story is told, with the various characters who accompanied her during the Nazi regime, the communist regime, and German reunification. But is that the real question? Is this text about this character, or about the idea we build of her? And if so, whose idea is it, if not the author’s own? And what is your point of view about this enigmatic person that you chose to portray? The protagonist is, and is not, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a persona created by a writer. And, therefore, the dramaturgical axis must be centered on the author himself. An author who is, at the same time, a character in this play, full of points of view and, above all, clouded by the love he has for the “hero” he created, more than for the real character.

Fiction trumps reality, and the real Charlotte never saw herself on stage. At least, she never saw Doug Wright’s version of herself—because, in the meantime, she died. As morbid as this circumstance is, it makes I am my own woman a rare theatrical event, full of pitfalls and performative zones that lead us to question what reality is and, at the same time, which is the theater. Charlotte represents who she is Charlotte, or is it really Charlotte? Are the stories you tell real because they happened, or because those who hear them believe in them? Last year, the Festival’s audience voted for this show to return in 2023 as an Honor Show.

I am my own woman (Fernando Lopes-Graça Auditorium of the Romeu Correia Municipal Forum, on the 9th at 6 pm, on the 11th at 9.30 pm, and on the 12th at 7 pm)
