European initiative ‘Battery 2030+’ wants to create sustainable batteries

The European initiative Battery 2030+ aims to develop new types of sustainable batteries, with high performance, resistant, safe and with the least possible environmental impact.

On September 1, it entered a new phase with the beginning of seven research projects: Big-Map, Instabat, Sensibat, Spartacus, Bat4ever, Hidden, and Battery 2030Plus.

With a total budget of 40.5 million euros under the Horizon 2020 innovation program, the projects cover different thematic areas.

The first aims to develop a European platform to combine large-scale calculations and experimental studies to map the complex reactions that occur in a battery.

The second area covers the development and integration of sensors that examine and report battery status in real time and the third area the development of “self-healing” components that increase battery life and safety.
