The 4th edition of Festival Emergente will take place on the 28th and 29th of December, respectively at Music Box and B.Leza. Two iconic venues in Lisbon’s nightlife and increasingly associated with programming for new values.

As it is already a hallmark of the festival, Super Emergente talent will be the focus. The poster consists of 8 musical projects selected in the Open Call and 4 musical projects from the new generation of Portuguese music values invited by the organization. This year, everyone will take to the Emergente stages distributed by Musicbox and B.Leza to share their talent in the two iconic Lisbon venues. The festival’s fourth edition returns at the end of the year as the last festival of 2022, reaffirming its fresh, dynamic, and unpredictable character.

Four of the bands selected in the contest, Momma T, Black Lavender, JAVISOL, and O Marta, will perform at Musicbox, on December 28th, starting at 8 pm, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. Momma T, with 2 episodes already recorded, brings soul and jazz sounds to the festival and alternative R&B, mixing acoustic and electronic elements.

Black Lavender is a funky rapper who sold out several venues in Spain and performed at the DCODE Festival in Madrid, currently living in Porto. JAVISOL is rock, sung in Portuguese, with influences from grunge to fado with songs about the pain that people feel and keep silent.

O Marta is Guilherme Marta’s latest solo project, which promotes a contemporary approach to traditional Portuguese folklore, seeking to create a sound mix of typical Portuguese rhythms, with polyphonic vocal harmonies that recall not only Portuguese singing, but also Eastern European ones. , always united in a foundation that explores in detail the language of indie-pop.

The first night ends with Bandua, the vibrant project by Bernardo D’Addario and Edgar Pereira Valente, which emerged this year from the collaboration between the two musicians, whose talent was recently recognized by RTP, which invited them to compose one of the themes of the Festival da Canção 2023. It will be Bandua’s last concert of 2022, sponsoring and motivating the even more emerging ones, after a year of playing their prodigious debut album of the same name “Bandua” all over the country. 9 songs based on the musical traditions of Beira Baixa, reviewed in the light of the electronic “downbeat”, which results in sounds of a piercing and danceable contemporaneity, evoking the ancestry of Beira culture with each beat.

The other four bands selected for the festival lineup through the Super Emergentes contest, THEMANUS, Ana de Llor, Siwo, and A Sul, will perform on December 29 at B.Leza, starting at 9.30 pm, with doors opening at 21:00 for the start of a night that will last until 03:00.

THEMANUS explores compositional ideas ranging from written to fully improvised music. Based on the eclecticism that jazz has always provided them, they range through aesthetics such as drum ‘n’ bass, ambient, and boom bap, in order to satisfy their musical needs and, parallel or paradoxically, starve them.

Ana de Llor creates a seductive dark pop world mixed with Portuguese-inspired melodies and beats. De Llor’s music is best known for its strongly feminist themes and avant-garde songs that induce a self-created synesthetic visual atmosphere.

Siwo is part of an electronic music project called afro futurism, in which he combines electro, Afrobeats, Soul, and Hip-hop. After having several experiences with other bands, Siwo began to cross his creativity between electronic music and visual arts.

A Sul is the musical project of Cláudia Sul, who released her debut EP on July 15, 2022. The essence of the project simultaneously seeks to evoke a spirit of returning to Nature as a symbolic way of approaching and introspecting the intimate and profound space of the individual. About the fear of taking risks.

That night, Unsafe Space Garden and SFISTIKATED also go up to the emerging stage at the invitation of the organization. Having started their journey through musical irreverence in 2019, Unsafe Space Garden come to Emergente to play the themes of “Bro You Got Something In Your Eye – A Guided Meditation” through the spectrum of emotions that characterize the human being, served in an of musical tragicomedy “so that the bureaucracies of being alive cease to make sense and the stone of which we are made is unraveled.” SFISTIKATED is the duo João Marques (First Breath After Coma) and Roberto Oliveira (Whales).

They depart from the canons of electronics to then deconstruct themselves through a game of collaborations that cross borders and genres. A hand full of guests, from Germany, England, and the United States, created with them a first album that reconstructs “in an original and pertinent way, connections in the area of electronic music, pop and hip-hop, without deviating from conventional standards, but challenging these with touches of experimentalism and glitch”. The night and the festival ends with the DJ Set by James Flower, Tiago Narciso’s alter ego, a producer and DJ from Évora residing in Lisbon, and the last entry in the Discotexas catalog. Passionate about electronic music and vibrant melodic atmospheres, James decided to develop a personal and perceptive approach to his compositions, creating attractive tracks that mix nostalgic sounds and warm textures.

A lineup is full of talent, emerging and diverse, more eclectic than in previous years. Emergente thus once again lives up to its main mission of supporting the new generation of Portuguese music, not giving up, reinventing itself at each edition, and offering every year the greatest number of opportunities possible, as well as the visibility and conditions for the selected projects to shine and make their talent emerge.

All Super Emergentes projects compete for the “Best Musical Project” and “Best Concert” awards, respectively the recording of an album or EP at Estúdio Camaleão and a concert/showcase on SBSR.fm, the festival’s radio partner for the 3rd consecutive year. The first prize is a decision by deliberation of the Festival Jury, and the second is an exclusive choice of the public, exchanging the ticket for each day for a ballot. There is also the possibility of a concert by the bands that won both awards, in 2023, at B.Leza. The winning band of the Best Concert opening for the presentation of the album of the winning band of the Best Musical Project.

We know that good musicians become even better musicians when they have good conditions to do what they do best. We believe this is the greatest incentive we can give this new generation to pursue their dreams.

Festival Emergente already has an enormous backlog of talent that is leaving its mark on the history of Portuguese music. In 2022 we will continue to contribute to this history in the best way, combining Super Emerging talents with others confirmed by the public and the music industry and who are now emerging in other dimensions of their artistic paths.

The bands that will perform at Festival Emergente 2022, take to the stages of two rooms that are themselves an integral part of the history of Portuguese music and Lisbon nightlife, joining the list of more than 40 names that have made the history of the festival so far: em 2021, Solar Corona, Humana Taranja, Los Chapos, Caio, April Marmara, Biloba, Bia Maria, False Nine, Almost Nicolau, Madalena Palmeirim, Chinaskee, Sreya, Gator the Alligator, Mike Vhiles, Conjunto Júlio, Eva Cigana, Mikee Shite, Too Many Suns; in 2020, Dream People, Hause Plants, Meta, Fugue, Rui Rosa, Cíntia, Vila Martel, Lana Gasparøtti; in 2019: Dji Jays, Stone Dead, Sunflowers, Cave Story, Ossos D’Ouvido, Palmers, Elephant Maze, Môrus, Venga Venga, Pedro Mafama, Filipe Sambado, and the Luxury Escorts, Tourjets, Time for T, Sun Blossoms, Cosmic Mass.
