JOÃO BARRADAS | Culturgest

We know that music is born of science, between waves and frequencies of the laws of physics, but its supernatural magical power continues to dazzle us and, more than anything, to disturb us. It has been a communication tool between us, but also a privileged channel for dialoguing with spirits or even the stars and planets of the universe. And when we lack interlocutors, music invents its own worlds, with its own religions and characters, trying to write their languages, bibles or dictionaries, transforming magic into mysticism. Culturgest challenged João Barradas to collect some moments of this mystical world, brought from the European tradition of classical music to the dexterity of contemporary improvisation: from Arvo Pärt and its sacred minimalism in the medieval spiritual light of Hildgard von Bingen, passing through the tribute to the theosophy of Alexander Scriabin. At the end, we will listen to Choral, by João Barradas himself, where the voice, as a privileged corporal practice of mysticism, takes on a multitude of forms, including yours. However, it is from the accordion, acoustic and synthesized, that the most intense of their voices will always come out, where the air multiplies in a thousand throats, as proof of the magic of their instrument, music and art.
