‘Listen’ and ‘Mosquito’ were the most awarded at the Sophia Awards

In the tenth edition of the prizes awarded by the Portuguese Academy of Cinema, Ana Rocha de Sousa’s “Listen” won five Sophia, namely Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Actress for Lúcia Moniz.

“Listen”, Ana Rocha de Sousa‘s first fiction feature film, is a drama about a Portuguese family who emigrated to London, struggling to regain the guardianship of their children, unfairly removed for alleged abuse.

The film won several awards at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, including the “Lion of the Future”.

“Mosquito”, a film by João Nuno Pinto that started for this edition with 13 nominations, won six awards, including Best Actor, for João Nunes Monteiro, and Best Secondary Actor, awarded posthumously to Filipe Duarte.

The film “Ordem Moral“, by Mário Barroso, which had ten nominations, received two awards: for Best Original Sound Band, composed by Mário Laginha, and Best Makeup and Hair, for Ana Lorena and Natália Bogalho.

Highlight also goes to Alexandra Ramires, who won the Sophia for best animation with “Elo”, and for the director Bernardo Lopes, who won the Sophia for Best Fiction Short, with “Moço”, and one of the Nico revelation awards.

Amor Fati“, by Cláudia Varejão, was considered the best feature-length documentary and “Terranova”, by Joaquim Leitão, the best television series.

This year, for the first time, the Portuguese Academy of Cinema awarded the prize for Best European Film, in a vote between several critics and experts, having won “J’Accuse – An Officer and a Spy“, by Roman Polanski.

This award was received by Pedro Borges, who distributed the film in Portugal, recalling that Polanski’s work was in the theater for a few weeks, because of the covid-19 pandemic.

Actress and director Maria do Céu Guerra and actor Sinde Filipe were awarded the Sophia Career Award.
