Portuguese-Galician group exhibition, “The Atlantic that Unites Us,” celebrates the historical and cultural connection between Portugal and Galicia

The deep historical, cultural, and geographical connection between Portugal and Galicia will be highlighted in the exhibition “The Atlantic that Unites Us,” open to the public from August 9 to September 20 in Room 1 of the Árvore Cooperative, in Porto.
This group exhibition brings together twelve contemporary artists—six Portuguese and six Galician: Antón Sobral, Chelo Rodríguez, Cristina Fernández Nuñez, David Pessegueiro, Eva Tarrío, Evelina Oliveira, Jose Molares, Luísa Gonçalves, Manuela Pimentel, Rosa García, Rui Aguiar, and Rui Anahory. Their works reflect distinct artistic languages but a common vision: the celebration of the shared identity between the two sister peoples. Through art, the roots that unite these two regions are revisited, with a special focus on northern Portugal, whose affinities with Galicia have remained alive throughout the centuries.
The exhibition evokes elements that shape their shared history: from the medieval troubadour tradition that united the poetic voices of Galicians and Portuguese, to the linguistic, cultural, and economic ties that persist to this day. The sea—a symbol of separation and union—also occupies a central place in this shared narrative: a sea experienced together, with its riches and dangers, joys and losses.
“The Atlantic that Unites Us” is more than an artistic exhibition—it is a visual and sensitive testament to the fraternity between two peoples who, although separated by a border, share the same spirit, the same memory, and the same Atlantic soul.
