Two months to go until the European Lisbon 2021

Countdown to the biggest European judo competition. In the year of European Capital of Sport – Lisbon 2021, the best European judo athletes will face the Portuguese capital, from April 16 to 18, with the Olympic Games on the horizon.

The start of the European Judo Championship – Lisbon 2021 is scheduled for 16 April. On the day with 2 months to go before the competition starts, we started to reveal why this is one of the biggest sporting events held in Portugal this year.

With the Tokyo Olympic Games postponed to 2021 (23 July – 8 August), the Lisbon European Championship is one of the biggest events in the sport preceding the Olympic Games. The race represents, for many athletes, one of the last opportunities to guarantee qualification for Tokyo, or to ensure the presence among the seeded players in the Olympic draw. The winner of each category adds 700 points to the world ranking. When winning silver, the athlete adds 490 points, while bronze guarantees 350 points.

At this moment, Portugal has 8 Judocas (6 Female and 2 Male) in Olympic qualifying position: Catarina Costa (-48 kg, 8th in the ranking with 4439 points), Joana Ramos (-52 kg, 21st in the ranking with 2540 points), Telma Monteiro (-57 kg, 7th in the ranking with 3923 points), Bárbara Timo (-70 kg, 11th in the ranking with 3660 points), Patrícia Sampaio (-78 kg, 14th in the ranking with 3494 points), Rochele Nunes (+78 kg, 12th in the ranking with 3486 points), Anri Egutidze (-81 kg, 19th in the ranking with 2533 points) and Jorge Fonseca (-100 kg, 3rd in the ranking with 5482 points). These positions and scores are provisional, with competitions to be disputed and points to be distributed until June 28, the end of the Olympic qualification period.
