The “largest rail freight terminal” in the Iberian Peninsula will be built in Vila Nova de Famalicão, with the investment of 35 million euros by a “leading company” in the sector, announced today the local authority.
In a statement, Câmara de Famalicão explains that the terminal, built by Medway, under a protocol with the local authority and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), will serve the ports of Leixões and Sines and “ the need to increase container handling capacity in the north of the country. ”
According to the autarchy, “the construction of the terminal will start as soon as the respective project obtains the necessary licenses, and is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2020“, estimating the municipality to create 100 direct jobs and indirect “to operate this terminal“.
The new infrastructure will have an area of 200 thousand square meters, six lines of 750 meters and a parking capacity of 10,000 TEU (a unit equivalent to 20 Feet, standard measure used to calculate the volume of a container), which is equivalent to more than 500 thousand movements per year.
The new terminal said the text, “will be equipped with the most modern technologies, at the level of the best terminals in the world.”
The signature of the protocol between the company, autarchy and IP is scheduled for Thursday, in the Hall Hall of the Town Hall of Vila Nova de Famalicão.
