Fat Freddy’s Drop Celebrates Anniversary in Lisbon

Doing this for the love of music, the legendary band Fat Freddy’s Drop returns to the stage in 2026 to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album, Based On A True Story – with a performance at Sagres Campo Pequeno on September 23.

The 51-date tour across Australia, Aotearoa, Europe, and the UK marks the band’s return after the unexpected loss of founding member Chris ‘MU’ Faiumu. United in their decision to continue, Fat Freddy’s Drop wants to pay tribute to their legacy and celebrate the album that launched their musical journey.

Lead singer Dallas Tamaira says, “It’s important for us to honour the intentions we had with MU, and playing this album live is part of that.”

Released independently in 2005, Based On A True Story became a landmark in contemporary music—spending 111 consecutive weeks in the New Zealand Top 40, the longest-running album on the country’s charts, winning eight NZ Music Awards, and receiving a nod at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Music Awards in the UK.

Saxophonist Scott Towers adds: “This was our first studio album, and its success was the springboard for an incredible journey. We want to pay tribute to the music, to MU, and to the band he helped create, to the fans around the world who have always supported us.”

With its unmistakable fusion of soul, dub, reggae, and electronica, Based On A True Story remains a landmark work—and the 2026 tour, which will stop in Lisbon at Sagres Campo Pequeno, promises to celebrate its history with the same energy, improvisation, and passion that have always defined Fat Freddy’s Drop.
