Liliana Tomé, Researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE – Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA is one of four researchers recognized this year for the L’Oréal Portugal Medals of Honor award for Women in Science.
In order to support scientific research projects, the Medals of Honor award a total prize of 60 thousand euros, divided among the four awarded researchers. Since 2004, 57 young researchers have been recognized in our country.
Liliana Tomé holds a PhD in Engineering and Technology Sciences from the António Xavier Chemical and Biological Technology Institute (ITQB NOVA), in 2014, and stayed at this institute as a researcher. In 2018, after being awarded an individual Marie Curie scholarship, she went to POLYMAT, at Universidad del País Vasco, and in 2020 she returned to Universidade Nova. With two small children, the researcher says she never felt a difference in opportunities because she was a woman and for her the most important thing is support during motherhood.
“I heard that I was pregnant shortly after applying for the Marie Curie scholarship and when I heard that I had won, I thought I would give up. I didn’t give up thanks to the support of my partner. I went to San Sebastian (Spain) with my 15-month-old son and once or twice a month we had his father’s visit. It was tough, but it was a very important experience in my training and career.”, Says Liliana Tomé.
In her research, in the area of the Environment, she proposes to find more efficient answers to capture the gases we emit, namely carbon dioxide (CO2). Liliana Tomé’s research focuses on the development of a new set of more efficient materials to capture CO2, for example in exhaust gases released during energy production, and to prevent its release into the atmosphere.
