Fernanda Ribeiro wins UCCLA-CMLisboa Literary Revelation Award

The winning work of the 9th edition of the UCCLA-CMLisboa Literary Revelation Award – New Talents, New Works in Portuguese Language was attributed to the novel “Cantagalo” written by Fernanda Teixeira Ribeiro, 40 years old, Brazilian nationality and resident in São Paulo , Brazil.

The jury also decided to award two honorable mentions:

  • Poetry “Chão de Saibro” by Frederico da Cruz Vieira de Sousa, Brazilian, 42 years old, resident of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil;
  • The novel “The Syntax of War” by Joaquim Njungo Jeremias, Angolan, aged 29, was born in Luena, province of Moxico, Angola.

According to the jury, “Cantagalo” is “a family romance, with Praxedes, an obtuse name, at the centre of the fiction. A story of quick adventures, and lively dialogues, what runs through this book like an underground river is not only the female condition and the issue of writing, but the condition of the Book itself as a possibility of escaping an empty, concrete life, made up of meaningless scenes in this place – Cantagalo – which is an allegory of all of Brazil. Everything in authentic diction, a way of making the characters speak that is, in fact, reminiscent of another world.”

Regarding honourable mentions, the jury states that “Chão de Saibro” “takes us back to the graphic experiences of visual poetry, the iconic experimentation of text, transforming it into a true text-plot-tissue of words. It is a book made up of poems where sound and its games override meaning.”

In the novel “The Syntax of War” “Africa sings its pain”, where the protagonists “are allegories of all those who faced the colonial war. It is about discovering in this book of descriptive prose, intense dialogues, photographs of the interiors of various hells…, a way of narrating that articulates the performative… with the social novel where the anti-war message is only the most obvious level of this committed voice.”
