LISBOA MAURICIANA is a route that takes us on a path dotted between the heart of Alfama and Mouraria Fadista. From the palm tree to the guitar, passing by the “cross of the churchyard” of the Santo Estêvão Church and the “attic of the Almond tree”, with eyes fixed on the Tagus, thinking about the city, knowing or remembering the life and work of the King without a Crown, Fernando Maurício.

At each point, a poem. In each poem, a Fado, a relationship with space, a clue about Maurício.

LISBOA MAURICIANA is a project by the Parish Council of Santa Maria Maior that pays tribute to the King of Fado and is complemented by the bust erected in 2014 by the Parish Council of Santa Maria Maior, in Rua da Guia, and with the House-Museum Fernando Maurício, cultural equipment managed by the Parish Council since 2015.

When starting the route, in no predefined order, the Mauritian traveler will find floor plates with QR codes, whose reading refers to the information related to the point where he is. The poem and the poet, Fado interpreted by the unmistakable voice of Fernando Maurício and the geographical context of that point. You’ll always find more: a map of the route, a link to the Fernando Maurício House-Museum, and the fado singer’s biography.

Honoring Maurício is honoring Fado and the city
Born in Mouraria, the King of Fado went far beyond his neighborhood. He immortalized the Church of Santo Estêvão, in neighboring Alfama, spoke of the Tagus, of Fado itself, and of being a fado singer. He sang loves and dislikes, bohemia, farewell fados, longing, and nostalgia. He sang more about his neighborhood, in an autobiographical way, remembering his childhood and the hardships of life. Above all, he sang soulfully, every word of every poem he lifted with his voice.
Fernando Maurício lives in collective memory and, now, on the stones of our sidewalk. Walking through the parish, we cross the life and work of the fado singer who would mark generations, leaving his legacy in Fado. Fernando Maurício is in every corner of Santa Maria Maior and even more present in the bust erected in Rua da Guia and in the House-Museum of this Parish Council which, in the heart of the neighborhood, in Rua João do Outeiro, presents the life and work he left.
With the Lisboa Mauritiana itinerary, we invite you to travel through the territory to the sound of Mauritius, on a path that crosses the neighborhoods and Fado itself.

Miguel Coelho, President of the Parish Council of Santa Maria Maior
