Festival of Traditions returns to Ponte da Barca

From the 10th to the 12th of May, with free entry, the town will be filled with cultural celebrations, regional gastronomy and entertainment. The Toy Concert will liven up Friday night.

On the 10th, 11th and 12th of May, at Praça Terra da Nóbrega, the Municipality of Ponte da Barca, in collaboration with local associations and folkloric groups, will organize the Festa das Tradições, where the picturesque village of Alto Minho becomes a centre of tradition and animation. It will therefore be three days full of cultural celebrations, regional cuisine and entertainment.

The program will be packed, with lots of music and entertainment; exhibitions, which highlight the uses and customs of Ponte da Barca; traditional workshops, where local techniques and ancient knowledge are learned, from making traditional bread to recreating linen spinning; and also a tribute to tradition, with the O Traje do Povo parade, which highlights the colourful regional costumes. Without forgetting the regional cuisine, served in taverns, with a huge variety of typical dishes from the region and snacks that are part of the municipality’s heritage.

On Friday, the 10th, the festivities will begin with the opening of the taverns and crafts, at 6 pm, followed by the Toy concert at 10 pm, an explosion of rhythm and joy that promises to liven up the night.

On Saturday, the 11th, the traditional games will start at 10 am, followed by lots of entertainment and day-long workshops, where ‘free embroidery’ will be taught, bread making and the recreation of linen spinning, for example. At night, at 10 pm, the concert will be hosted by the group Roconorte, known for its vibrant show and artistic talent.

On Sunday, at 10 am, the Feirão will take place, at Praça Terra da Nóbrega, with sales and exhibition of local products. Traditional games follow and, in the afternoon, the folkloric ranch parade, where the colourful regional costumes will shine. Finally, at 4:30 pm, the folklore groups Bombos and Rusgas will bring traditional dances and music, celebrating the roots of the region.

Augusto Marinho, Mayor of Ponte da Barca, states “This event is a celebration of our cultural roots and a moment of sharing the joy and authenticity of our people”. He also adds that “The commitment of the ranch associations is to be commended local folklorists in preserving and promoting the region’s heritages”.

With free entry, the Festa das Tradições is an initiative of the Municipality of Ponte da Barca, which pays homage to the identity of this Portuguese village and highlights its heritage, full of authentic experiences.
