Lisbon Festivities with pianos, Paredes and jacarandas in bloom
We are entering the second week of the Lisbon Festivities with Music at the Castle. On June 7, Rui Massena will give a concert-journey that will take us between songs and spaces, the city and the world, the visible and the tangible, in a celebration of the soul of Lisbon with the view of São Jorge Castle as the backdrop.
Before the concert by the maestro, composer and pianist, the young talent Gil Brito – who, at just 10 years old, won Got Talent Portugal – will take to the stage, also to play the piano.
The Fado Museum will open the tribute exhibition Variações para Carlos Paredes on the 6th. Through musical instruments, records, printed documents and films, this exhibition will transport us through the life and work of the genius of Portuguese composition and guitar, on the centenary of his birth.
With the jacarandas of Parque Eduardo VII in bloom, the Book Fair begins. This edition will be held at museums and monuments in the city and will begin with the talk Lisboa Plural, with Paulo Almeida Fernandes (Museu de Lisboa) and Margarida Kol de Carvalho (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), on June 10th. The following day, Casa Fernando Pessoa will invite families to Causar Poemas, a writing workshop that will be based on poems by Pessoa and his heteronyms.
As part of the Osaka in Lisbon program, MUDE – Museu do Design will open Osaka – 55 years later, designing the future on the 5th, where the project and pieces designed by Atelier Daciano da Costa for the Portuguese pavilion at the 1970 Osaka Universal Exhibition can be seen. The Japanese Cinema Cycle will also begin at Cinema São Jorge, which will show everything from Kurosawa classics to Miyazaki animation. On the 4th, Casa Fernando Pessoa will hold a talk on Japanese Poetry in Translation.
On the 7th, we will once again celebrate the city’s multiculturalism with the Korean Culture Festival, in the gardens of the Lisbon Museum – Palácio Pimenta, and the Bollywood Holi Festival and the Indian Market, at the Hindu Community of Portugal.
The celebrations for Lisbon’s most beloved patron saint continue with the Trezena de Santo António, the traditional Tronos (which can be seen from Beato to Belém and from Alfama to Carnide) and the Corrida de Santo António, on the 8th, in Belém. At night, in the working-class neighbourhoods, the party continues with the Arraiais.
