Festival do Maio with Sérgio Godinho, Slow J and Ana Tijoux, in Seixal

The second edition of the Festival do Maio returned to Seixal, an initiative of the Municipality of Seixal, under the artistic direction of Luís Varatojo.

Last weekend, May 28th and 29th, the second edition of the Festival do Maio took place in Parque Urbano do Seixal. Two concert nights that had as their central element his speech of intervention, from politics to social criticism, from environmental activism to struggles against ethnic and gender discrimination, including issues related to the defense of cultural identities and the rights to self-determination.

On both days, in the intervals between the performances, videos were shown in which actors and singers interpreted poems of interventionist poetry, which deal with themes such as peace, work, women, racism, and freedom, by the author. by António Gedeão, Sidónio Muralha, Manuel Alegre, Ary dos Santos, Vinicius de Moraes and Luís Silva (Cuti), among others.

The first day opened its doors at 5:30 pm The opening concert, at 8:00 pm, was with A Garota Não, a project by the singer from Setúbal, Cátia Mazari Oliveira. Through her voice, in a poetic and genuine way, we travel for love, for suffering, but also through a music of intervention of our time: social and political problems are sung, with the aim of transmitting the precariousness in which the majority of Portuguese live, with a real and raw view.

Then we heard on the big stage the project Luta Livre, by musician Luís Varatojo that results from an interventionist look at society and the present.

Then the star of the night, the Chilean Ana Tijoux, initiated in hip-hop, took to the stage, she crosses the boundaries of the genre, thanks to the powerful trajectory as a solo artist that started in 2009 and that transformed her into the most relevant Chilean figure international of her generation.

To close the first night, the Beatbombers, a duo formed by DJ Ride and Stereossauro, took to the stage, exploring the potential of the record player as a musical instrument, perfecting the art of creating beats, and do not miss the opportunity to go out and cheer crowds of all sizes, at clubs or at festivals like this one.

The second and last day of the festival began with the concert of the great Bezegol, one of the best urban poets of the national music scene, with an unmistakable and unique timber, ranging from reggae to hip-hop, among others.

Then, we heard one of the artists that mark Portugal, Sergio Godinho brought to the Festival do MaioNação Valente“, his latest album. The songs that make up the album were joined by others, less recent, of the more and less well-known ones, which enriched the portrait of the Portuguese nation.

The Festival do Maio ended in the best way, with Slow J, acclaimed by the public and the critic being one of the national hip-hop artists that best bridges the underground and the mainstream, with intimate and authentic lyrics and powerful instrumentals and innovative. This concert also marked Slow J‘s return to the stages since 2019.

In addition to the musical proposals, there was also a street food area in the enclosure, complying, of course, with all the rules of the health authorities. The Festival do Maio thus ends its second edition with the promise that it will return in 2022 with more music.
