The 2024 Canal Festival had “record attendance” and there are already dates for the next edition
More than 60 artistic and creative structures, from 11 nationalities, filled the city with shows in the most diverse artistic areas. The event returns in 2025 for its 10th edition, between July 16th and 20th.
The 2024 Canal Festival, which took place in Aveiro between the 17th and 21st of July, had a “record attendance”. The event returns to Canals City, between July 16th and 20th, 2025, for its tenth edition.
Organized by Aveiro City Council, and this year integrated into the programming of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture, the festival involved more than 60 artistic and creative structures, from 11 countries, and provided 110 presentations, including five absolute premieres and seven national premieres.
“Public attendance at the Festival dos Canals was the biggest ever, it was a record. The program for this event was very intense, and diverse and marked the 14 public spaces in the Municipality of Aveiro where the Festival’s various shows took place. We are very pleased with this commitment and invite everyone to be in Aveiro next year, between the 16th and 20th of July, to celebrate with us the 10th anniversary of the Festival dos Canals”, says the Mayor of Aveiro, José Ribau Esteves.
Aveiro hosted shows from various areas and artistic expressions, including street theatre, new circus, dance, music, performance and gastronomy. There were five consecutive days of programming involving streets, squares, gardens and the city’s canals, with one of the shows even being performed in the ria, beyond the floodgates.
For José Pina, artistic director of the event, the outcome of this edition “is extremely positive, not only due to the public’s participation but also due to the artistic dimension of the projects”. “It was the best edition to date and raises the bar for 2025, but I do not doubt that we will live up to the expectations of the vast community that follows the 2024 Canal Festival.”
