Fado Festival for the first time in Brasília

The Fado Festival lands in Brasília for the first time, on the 25th and 26th of November, with the theme Fado and Freedom.

Promoting the language, culture, and brand of Portugal around the world with one of its main national symbols, the Fado Festival makes its debut in the capital of Brazil on the 25th and 26th of November, with concerts by Raquel Tavares and António Zambujo at the Teatro do Museu Nacional da República.

With the theme “Fado and Freedom,” coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of April 1974, the event, in addition to concerts by significant figures of Portuguese music and culture, features the exhibition “Fado and Freedom,” and, in a location to be confirmed, the screening of the film “The Consul of Bordeaux,” and a conference on the same theme led by Rodrigo Costa Félix.

Considered the largest display of Fado internationally, since its debut in Madrid, the Fado Festival is present in 17 major cities in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

The Fado Festival is organized by Everything is New and Alto e Bom Som in co-production with the Museu do Fado | Lisboa Cultura.

About Raquel Tavares

The award-winning Raquel Tavares is one of the most important voices of contemporary fado. Born in Lisbon on January 11, 1985, she has been immersed in the various paths and spaces of Fado since she was 10 years old. At 12, her future was already foreseen when she won the Great Fado Night, an initiative of the Press House. At only 14 years old, she released her first album, “Porque canto o Fado,” and a few years later, she released a new album, “Raquel Tavares,” produced by Jorge Fernando, which earned her the Revelation Award “Amália Rodrigues Awards” from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation.

In 2008, already with the knowledge garnered from the major Fado houses in Lisbon (“Café Luso,” “Senhor Vinho,” “Arcadas do Faia,” “Adega Mesquita,” “Adega Machado,” “Casa de Linhares “Bacalhau De Molho), she launched “Bairro,” produced by Diogo Clemente. Her third album is agreed upon by critics as one of the best Fado albums in history. After eight years, Raquel Tavares released the album “Raquel” in 2016. The new work is not just Fado but a collection of great songs and significant fados that brought her immediate success and a gold record.

Her passion for the music of Roberto Carlos led to an invitation from Sony Music Portugal and Brazil to record a tribute album to the “King,” one of the greatest singers in Brazil and one of the most significant artists of Portuguese expression, resulting in huge sales success, a platinum record award, and an extensive tour within and outside Portugal. After a long and revitalizing break, in early 2020 she was invited to join various television projects where she acted in two prime-time soap operas on SIC and in a comedy series on RTP1.

For the first time, she ventures into the world of voice acting for animated films (“Mr. Link” and “Puss in Boots”) and invests in one of her great passions beyond music: dance, purely for pleasure, where she is happy and fulfilled. Four years later, nostalgia for the stage speaks louder, and Raquel accepts the challenge of the prestigious International Fado Festival, where she has already participated in previous editions alongside names like Carlos do Carmo, and Camané, among others. São Paulo will once again host one of the most powerful voices of Fado. An iconic, authentic Fadista, full of tradition. Raquel Tavares.

About António Zambujo

António Zambujo is one of the greatest representatives of Portuguese music, language, and culture today on a national and international level, and for several years has been almost on an uninterrupted world tour. He built a musical career by carving a unique path that lies between Fado and Cante Alentejano, constantly refusing to be confined to any particular genre or musical school. He unequivocally embraces the influence of Brazilian music by releasing an album in tribute to Chico Buarque in 2016 – “Até Pensei que Fosse Minha” – which earned him a Latin Grammy nomination in 2017, in the Brazilian Popular Music category.

More recently, he has been performing alongside the famous Brazilian guitarist and composer Yamandu Costa. At the end of 2018, he named his latest album of original recordings ‘Do Avesso’ (Of the Flip Side). Here, he reinvents himself once again and broadens the scope of his musical language by bringing in the Sinfonietta Orchestra of Lisbon and three of the most talented Portuguese musicians and producers: Nuno Rafael, Filipe Melo, and João Moreira. There are many worlds within the universe of António Zambujo, and whether he performs only accompanied by his guitar or surrounded by his musicians, he is certainly a singer and musician of excellence with a unique ability to captivate the audience that listens to him. In 2024, he returns to the Fado Festival, where he has been present numerous times, for another unique and unmissable concert.
