From September 11-13, 2025, Praia will host, for the first time, the Fado Cape Verde Festival, one of the largest international celebrations of this Portuguese musical genre, now with a stage at the Jorge Barbosa National Auditorium.
The Fado Festival reaches its 15th edition this year, paying tribute to the centenary of Carlos Paredes, one of the most important and influential Portuguese musicians of the 20th century.
This first edition in Cape Verde features the young fado singer Teresinha Landeiro, who will present her latest album, “Para dança e para chorar,” to the Cape Verdean public in a very special concert scheduled for September 11. With a solid career despite her youth, Teresinha has established herself in the contemporary fado scene as a performer and composer, performing on renowned stages such as the Belém Cultural Centre, Casa da Música, and international festivals in Latin America and Spain.

With her striking and innovative style, the artist blends fado with pop and folklore influences, without losing its traditional essence. The album she brings to Praia includes collaborations with António Zambujo and Brazilian artist Jota.pê, exploring new sounds and solidifying her artistic identity.
In Praia, in addition to the concerts, the program also includes a film screening of the documentary “Movimentos Perpétuos” by Edgar Pêra and a concert/lecture, led by guitarist Bernardo Couto, at the Portuguese Embassy in Cape Verde.
Over three days, the Festival offers Cape Verdean audiences a journey through the soul of fado and an opportunity to celebrate the Portuguese language and culture, in dialogue with our musical and emotional heritage.

The Cape Verde Fado Festival is supported and partnered with the Presidency of the Republic of Portugal, the Portuguese Ministry of Tourism, the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, the Portuguese Embassy in Cape Verde, the Lisbon Culture Fado Museum, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Lisbon City Council, 100 anos Paredes, and the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, through the Directorate General for the Arts and Creative Industries.

Completing 15 editions since its inception in Madrid in 2011, the International Fado Festival, titled this year “100 anos Carlos Paredes” (in honor of the centenary of the exceptional Portuguese guitarist), promotes fado—and, consequently, the Portuguese language and culture—in 20 cities across 14 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
As a whole, the Fado Festival program offers a rich and diverse experience that celebrates the music, culture, and legacy of Carlos Paredes, one of the great masters of the Portuguese guitar.
The Carlos Paredes Centennial is the result of a partnership between the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Lisbon City Council, and Lisboa Cultura, through the Fado Museum.
