Fado Festival returns to São Paulo in November
Promoting the language, culture and brand of Portugal around the world with one of its main national flags, the Fado Festival lands once again in São Paulo. On November 19th, Teatro Sabesp Frei Caneca will host shows by António Zambujo and Raquel Tavares, which is the 14th edition of the festival.

With the theme “Fado and Freedom”, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of April 1974, the event features shows by Portuguese artists António Zambujo and Raquel Tavares, as well as the exhibition “Fado and Freedom ”. With a location still to be confirmed, the program will also include a screening of the film ‘The Consul of Bordeaux’, and a conference on the same topic, led by Rodrigo Costa Félix.
Considered the biggest Fado show internationally, since its debut in Madrid, the project has already been present in 18 major cities in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.
António Zambujo
António Zambujo is one of the greatest representatives of Portuguese music, language and culture today at a national and international level, and for a few years now he has been on an almost uninterrupted world tour. He has built a musical career by carving out a unique path, which lies between Fado and Cante Alentejano, and constantly refuses to be tied to any particular genre or musical school.
He unequivocally assumes the influence of Brazilian music by releasing an album in honour of Chico Buarque in 2016 – “Até Pensei que Fosse Minha” – which earned him a 2017 Latin Grammy nomination, in the Brazilian Popular Music category.
More recently, he has also performed in the company of the famous Brazilian guitarist and composer Yamandu Costa. In late 2018, he named his latest album of original recordings ‘Do Avesso’ (Of the Flip Side). Here, he reinvents himself once again and expands the range of his musical language, by bringing in the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa and three of the most talented Portuguese musicians and producers: Nuno Rafael, Filipe Melo and João Moreira.
There are many worlds within António Zambujo’s universe and, live, whether he performs only accompanied by his guitar or surrounded by his musicians, he is certainly an excellent singer and musician with a unique ability to captivate the audience. audience that listens to it. Raquel Tavares
The award-winning Raquel Tavares is one of the most important voices in contemporary fado. Born in Lisbon, on January 11, 1985, since the age of 10, she has been familiar with the many paths and spaces of Fado. At the age of 12, his future was already guessed, when he won the Grande Noite do Fado, an initiative of Casa da Imprensa. At just 14 years old, he released his first album, “Como canto o Fado” and, a few years later, he presented a new album, “Raquel Tavares”, produced by Jorge Fernando, which guaranteed him the “Prémios Amália Rodrigues” revelation award from the Amália Foundation. Rodrigues. In 2008 and already with the entire school of the great Fado houses in Lisbon (“Café Luso”, “Senhor Vinho”, “Arcadas do Faia”, “Adega Mesquita”, “Adega Machado”, “Casa de Linhares “Bacalhau De Molho ) releases “Bairro”, produced by Diogo Clemente.
His third album gathers consensus among critics, who consider it one of the best Fado albums in history. After eight years, Raquel Tavares released the album “Raquel” in 2016. The new work is not just fado, but a set of great songs and great fados that earned him immediate success and a gold record. The passion for Roberto Carlos’ music resulted in the invitation from Sony Music Portugal and Brazil to record an album in honour of the “King”, one of the greatest singers in Brazil and one of the greatest Portuguese-speaking artists, resulting in a huge sales success, the platinum album award and the extensive tour inside and outside Portugal.
After a long and invigorating break, at the beginning of 2020, she was invited to join several television projects where she participated as an actress in two prime-time soap operas, on SIC, and also in a comedy series on RTP1. For the first time, he ventures into the world of dubbing animated films (“Mr Link” and “Puss in Boots”) and invests in one of his great passions besides music: dancing, just for the pleasure of it, where he is happy and fulfilled.
Four years later, the longing for the stage speaks louder and Raquel accepts the challenge of the prestigious International Fado Festival, where she has participated in previous editions, alongside names such as Carlos do Carmo, and Camané, among others. The Fado Festival takes place in 17 major cities in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia and completes 14 editions in 2024 since its beginning in Madrid.
