Jazz Manouche Festival returns to Almada

May 17th, 18th and 19th

The third edition of the Jazz Manouche de Almada Festival, organized by Alma Danada – Associação Criativa, is back after the success of the last editions.

This year it takes place from the 17th to the 19th of May and features some of the most emblematic names in jazz manouche. There are 3 unmissable concerts and a blues and swing dance workshop, which exceptionally this year takes place in the SFIA Ballroom.

Jazz Manouche appears as a musical expression with the gipsy guitarist of the Manouche ethnicity Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Clube de França. This quintet maintained its activity between the 30s and 50s in Europe with Swing as its formal aesthetic but with gipsy appropriation under the influence of Django. In Portugal, this story is still little told or written, but it has matured, gaining more musicians and enthusiasts.

On May 17th, the public will be able to attend a concert by Adrien Marco Trio: Adrien Marco is currently one of the main names in the Jazz Manouche style. He is a self-taught guitarist who began playing at age 17 under the influence of Django Reinhardt’s music. His style is energetic, elegant, spontaneous and very virtuous. In eleven years of activity, he recorded four albums. Adrien Marco is accompanied by an excellent and solid rhythm section, Mathieu Chatelain on rhythm guitar and Claudius Dupont on double bass. Increasingly acclaimed by an audience of connoisseurs, the guitarist performed in places such as the Django Reinhardt Festival (Fontainbleu) Django In June (Boston), Django at Dewslake (United Kingdom), Jay Festival (Italy), Worms Festival (Germany), performs at the legendary Etoile Jazz Club in Paris, where Thomas Dutronc is a regular guest, and also at the Cabaret de L’Escale where legendary artists such as Jacques Brel or Edith Piaf have performed. Thus, after around eleven years, Adrien Marco Trio comes to Almada for the first time to the delight of the public and fans of gipsy jazz in Portugal.

On May 18th it’s the turn of Aurore Voilqué Trio feat. Angelo Debarre. Aurore Voilqué started playing the violin at the age of 4 and never stopped. He created his first quartet in 2003. He performed at some of the biggest jazz festivals in France (Jazz à Vienne, Marciac, Vauvert, La Baule, Jazz en Baie, Jazz Nimes métropole, 24h du swing), as well as in some of the main clubs of jazz in the country (Duc des Lombards, Sunset, Petit Journal Montparnasse, Meridien Jazz Café Montparnasse). Aurore is accompanied by Mathieu Chatelain’s rhythm guitar and Claudius Dupont’s double bass, delegating solos to the unavoidable Angelo Debarre, one of the greatest manouche jazz soloists the world has ever known. Angelo Debarre needs no introduction. This is the true traditional gypsy sound that the violinist sought when bringing together these 3 musicians, among the most sought-after of the genre. A magnificent journey into the world of gipsy music, with standards by Django Reinhardt, French songs and magnificent compositions by maestro Angelo Debarre.

On the same day, Rouge Manouche performs, a Gypsy Jazz quartet residing in the Algarve that presents a highly energetic and rhythmic swing inspired by Manouche rhythms and melodies with influences from American Jazz, immersing in the aura of Paris in the 30s.
