Mental Festival returns to Lisbon

8th Edition from 10th to 25th May at Cinema São Jorge, m atmosphere - Lumiar

In the 8th edition of the festival, MENTAL returns to Lisbon with a reinforced program that takes place over 15 days in the city, with film sessions, debates, conversation panels and many other activities indoors and outdoors from 10 to May 25th.

Since its creation in 2017, MENTAL has had a clear objective, to bring mental health to the public discussion and combat the illiteracy that exists on the subject. Speak clearly and clearly about this topic, and the platform chosen to address it is art, in particular cinema, which once again plays a central role in the 2024 programming with the M-Cinema sections: International Short and Medium Film Exhibition and o M-Cinema Jovem. The films that will be part of this edition’s program will soon be announced, but until then the Open Call aimed at national and international directors remains open through the FilmFreeway platform.

A central part of the programming will continue to be M-Debate and M-Talks. Conversation panels about mental health and illness with professionals in the field and moderated by people from the world of communication. This year’s participants will soon be announced, but the themes of the debate and talks in this edition are already known: the debate will have the theme “Dating and ghosting”; There are talks on “Social communication and mental health”, “Bureaucracy and mental health” and “Music and mental health”.

Also in this 8th edition, the literary program returns to the atmosphere m, from Montepio Associação Mutualista and there is a continuation of Mental Jovem and Mental Júnior (with programming to be announced soon) and Mental Natura, with outdoor activities that will take place this year at Lumiar, Lisbon.

In seven years, MENTAL has had an extraordinary impact on participants and audiences, consolidating itself as one of the main festivals on the cultural calendar of the city of Lisbon and Cinema São Jorge.

About MENTAL:

Mental – Mental Health Festival, is a production of Safe Space Portugal, a non-profit association, which was created in 2017 to combat mental health illiteracy. It is co-produced by the National Coordination of Mental Health Policies.

The chosen platform is culture in its broadest sense and the arts in particular, extraordinary vehicles for combating stigma, shame and lack of public and general information.

With a focus on programming, exhibition and discussion, MENTAL had a great impact in six editions, always in person, in terms of participants and audiences who attended international cinema exhibitions, M-Talks (public debates) on the topics covered and corresponding feature films. films, M-Debate on Digital Health, Theatre, Dance, music with My Story My Song and literary edition with its own seal that already has four original titles.

MENTAL has a unique public health interest and the choice of safe and common environments and spaces, such as cinemas, auditoriums and exhibition halls, invites promotion, sharing of experiences and communication of ideas, whilst combating stigma, prejudice and isolation.

MENTAL is part of the board of directors of the international Nefele Network and has numerous partnerships with similar European festivals.
