Festival of Arts of Coimbra with ballet inspired by the poetry of Sophia

The poetry of Sophia de Melo Breyner is the inspiration of the ballet “Tudo Quando Vi”, by the company Dance in Dialogues, which opens in Coimbra on the 23rd, in the context of the 11th Arts Festival.

Let’s express in movement the poetry of Sophia,” said choreographer Fernando Duarte, artistic director of Dance in Dialogues.

The company selected Sophia’s “half-dozen poems,” which “will be transposed onto the stage through the movement of bodies.”

However, the company wants to go beyond the mere plastic representation of poetry, and also proposes a discovery of the writing methods and sources of inspiration of the writer.

The performance of the four dancers on stage will take place to the sound of Portuguese composers like Lopes Graça or Luís Tinoco, with the paintings to be linked by pieces by Bach, the composer’s favorite author of “A Menina do Mar”. One of the poems will be read through sign language.

“Sophia liked to dance and studied dance. This show is a celebration that is not directly linked to the centenary, because we believe that Sophia’s poetry should be celebrated every day,” says the choreographer.

Organized by the Inês de Castro Foundation, the festival takes place in Coimbra from 19 to 28 and will mark the centenaries of the poets Jorge de Sena and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

The organization celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jorge de Sena with the realization, on the 20th, of an initiative entitled “Jorge de Sena – Literary Journey between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz”, inspired by the life and work of the poet, literary critic and translator, exiled for several years in Brazil and the United States, where he taught at the University of California, where he died in 1978.

Promoted by the Inês de Castro Foundation and Quinta das Lágrimas, with support and in partnership with the Chamber and the University of Coimbra (UC), among several entities, the Arts Festival is extended for ten days under the motto “Luz e Sombra “, including seven cycles with 28 events, in areas such as music, gastronomy, dance and visual arts, among others.

Among others, the program includes the performances of the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra, on the 24th, and the band of Salvador Sobral and Victor Zamora, on the 25th.
